The scientists are experimenting with quantum teleportation, which involves sending a quantum state of information — in this case, an apple — and receiving the result, or “state,” back from the distant location.

“The experiment took place in the quantum teleportation facility located at Microsoft’s Redmond Research Center, and was headed up by Dr. Subir Sachdeva,” Kelly writes. “The experiment involved using pairs of photons. Each pair was sent from a fixed location in New York City to the teleportation site in Redmond, Washington, which was located on the roof of Microsoft’s headquarters. The photon pairs were separated and sent in opposite directions along the respective paths.” 

It was a bit of a trial and error process, as the first attempt resulted in the apple getting lost. But it eventually worked.
