One day you find out the ability to stop time. You are delighted. But someday, you saw something else was moving when you have already stopped time. You now have to choose which is more important. Do you leave the other person to go back in time and try to stop it? Or do you leave the person to continue on? What happens when you get to the point that there is too much time left to go back and you still have to go through life? This question is the theme for the first chapter of Laura Ingalls Wilder's book, "Little House in the Big Woods." The book is a memoir of a little family living in the Dakota Territory of what is now North Dakota during the 1830s.
This family had no electricity, running water or indoor plumbing. Wilder wrote about these topics and more. As you read, try to see the importance of modern conveniences and learn something about life in the late 1800s.
This chapter is also about the Little House on the Prairie. Wilder says they lived in a sod house, which is what she called a log cabin. In reality, it was a wood frame house with two rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. Wilder wrote that they had a fireplace, but it was in the living room.
She also wrote about learning to milk cows and having to put up hay. She also learned to ride horses.
Wilder states that life was simple and there was not much to worry about. I hope you enjoy this book.
The illustrator of this book is Mary Peterson. She is the author of two other Little House books.
