Imagine that you’re on a desert island. Around is just the ocean. One day you find a bottle with paper and a phone in it. What do you do?”
As you might expect, responses range from “call my mom” to “get a life.” But a number of respondents said they would keep the bottle and its contents, hoping for a miracle.
“I’m a hopeless optimist, so my answer would be: I would keep the bottle and find a way to use it. I have a feeling it would be used for something good,” said Brian Kennedy of New York.
Those who answered that they would save the bottle and its phone spoke of what they saw as good omens.
“I saw a bottle like this floating in the ocean one day. I threw it back in the ocean and now I’m on this island,” said Tony Fonseca of Vancouver, B.C.
“My fiancee and I saw this bottle in Vancouver. We had our first kiss on the beach near it,” said Darlene Wu of Washington, D.C.
“I got the bottle in 1989 when I was living in Egypt. I had it with me for 12 years. When I returned, I put it on top of a post in my garden. It’s still there,” said Tarek Sadek of New York.
Not everyone would hang on to the bottle, however.
“I would call the police. I wouldn’t put it on top of a post,” said Stephanie McKeon of Utah.
The majority of the bottles were found in France, where they’re often put in a sandbank to catch aquatic creatures.

“I found it on the beach in Normandy when I was 9 years old,” said Marie Pestre of Bordeaux, France.
“It was full of worms and strange pieces of coral,” said Guy LeVicque of Bordeaux.
You’re on an island in the middle of the ocean. One day you find a bottle washed up on the shore with a piece of paper in it. What do you do?
“The Great One” – be it Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Mario Lemieux, Paul Coffey, Jaromir Jagr, Mike Bossy, or any other number of hockey legends, we all want to be “The Great One” one day.
Have you ever walked down the street and noticed a big truck that was parked in front of a house? You walk up to the house and ask the homeowner, “Did you move that truck?” He might respond, “What truck?” The game has changed, the world has changed, but a lot of people still see themselves as the same guy they were 30 years ago. I’m not saying that they don’t know better, but sometimes they don’t want to know better.
I get it. You are probably thinking to yourself, “I’m not that bad. I don’t drink, I’m not that bad. I’m not that bad.” But is that really the truth? If you are like me, there are a lot of things in your life that you are embarrassed to talk about. You don’t want to tell your boss that you are having a personal crisis, or you are ashamed of how many days you skip work each month because you have an addiction. You don’t want to admit to the people at work that you have not told your spouse that you are in love with them because you are not sure that they will accept your confession. The worst part is that you might have hurt someone in the process.
What is it going to take to get you to realize that your life has to change?
I suggest that you make a list of everything that you are embarrassed to tell your wife, your wife is embarrassed to tell her parents, your parents are embarrassed to tell their friends, your wife is embarrassed to tell her parents, your boss is embarrassed to tell his wife, your wife is embarrassed to tell her parents, your boss is embarrassed to tell his friends, your parents are embarrassed to tell their friends, your boss is embarrassed to tell his friends, your parents are embarrassed to tell their friends, and on and on and on. The list could go on and on and on. I don’t have a good answer for you. I don’t have a good answer for anyone.
I have a pretty good answer, but I won’t be able to share it with you until I talk to your wife. She is the one that is embarrassed, but she is the only one that you need to talk to. It is time for you to stop being embarrassed, it is time to stop hiding, and it is time to talk to your wife. If you are like me, then you will never do it because you feel that you are embarrassing her. There is nothing embarrassing about telling the truth.
When I first started dating my wife, I was really shy and quiet. I didn’t know how to talk to girls, and I didn’t know how to talk to my wife. I had a lot to learn. There were a lot of days when I wanted to walk away and leave my wife alone, but I didn’t want to hurt her feelings.
