Cooking is your greatest passion. You decide to write a book about it. You have to test all recipes. Your enthusiasm becomes so much that people want to do it too. You, an ambitious writer, decide to marry your new writing passion with your real-world job, and write a guide for recipe testing. With a solid following, you could start a company catering to the needs of the recipe testing community.

These are my personal examples, but they could describe some characteristics of a first-time entrepreneur: discovering your greatest passion, committing yourself to the pursuit of it, planning how to get to a specific outcome (such as a book or a company) and then taking action to make it a reality. You might be thinking, why not write about a passion that you’ve already experienced and demonstrated? The truth is that no one will give you advice about something that they themselves haven’t experienced and found themselves in. On the other hand, you might also be thinking, “Shouldn’t I be as well-versed in the field as possible before writing about it?” No, the best way to learn is to observe and experience it first-hand. If you find a new passion, commit to it and get to work.

Does that mean that all entrepreneurs should focus on their core passions? Of course not. I’ve been in the nonprofit sector since 2009 and have had many ideas about how to improve our service delivery. After running a few of those ideas through the funnel and seeing a “No,” a “Maybe,” a “Maybe not now” or a “Why don’t we give it more time to see if this idea works,” I’ve learned to put them on the backburner, while I work on another passion.

Entrepreneurship is not about starting a company or about being an expert. It’s about finding a problem to solve and then taking action to make it a reality. As Aristotle said, “The road to happiness is to work for the creation of something that is greater than yourself, and not to wait for other people to give you happiness.” So put down your smartphone, log off your laptop, leave your smartphone at home and follow your passions. You’re not alone. The world needs great entrepreneurs.

The essays in this book have the qualities of being on the first page of the book “Good Poetry” and the other three essays in this book: are witty and touching and have made me cry.

If you have not read the other three essays of this book, then the reading of the remainder of it will be emotionally difficult.

I did not want to write this book.

I have tried to put the pieces of my own life back together and make it alright.

I have taken some steps.

Some of them were beneficial and some of them were not.

At least I have some of it figured out, which is a good start!

But, I still have a lot to go.

I am going to try and get it published as a book so that it can be read by others!

The purpose of this weekly event is to spotlight a soon – to – be – released book that you are very much anticipating.

I know that I am always looking forward to new fiction coming out and it is easy for me to see why this novel had gotten so many good reviews.

Lenny a young boy is thrown into an unusual and very stressful situation when his parents get arrested for abusing his younger sister.

When the state moves in to take custody of his sister he is given the opportunity to stay with his grandfather who is very protective of him.

When his grandfather starts acting strange he has to find out what is wrong or he might lose both his sister and his grandfather!

I really liked the way this book was written and the way the characters were written.

You are playing the most important game of your life. Suddenly you forget the rules. Everything seems meaningless. You go to the darkest corner of your mind and play the game for yourself.

You know what I mean. If you’re a writer, you’ve probably done it. If you’re a man, it was probably on some level when you were a teenager. You forget that there is actually a meaning to the whole thing and you go at it completely on your own.

You can either dwell on what could’ve been or get busy.

You have to do it, even if it means you will be bad at it. Even if you might succeed in losing a part of you forever.

Once you’ve learned the rules, you have to use them, because they could be the only thing that’s left of you.

But do you remember the rules? Do you want to?

Dealing with the Fear of Failure

I can only imagine that for a human being, perfection is like being at the top of a mountain: it is either done or it is not. And perfection is an ideal and it is so far away that you can’t even imagine reaching it. It can be made possible by thousands of small actions to build a ladder to the top. But this ladder is not the mountain; the mountain is already a mountain. And it’s sitting on top of the ladder.

At the end of the day, it’s the decision that really counts. You can choose to climb the mountain or you can decide to stay in your house.

A person who makes it to the top is the one who is prepared to risk nothing in order to go for it. But a person who can risk what’s there can never reach the top.

When you decide to do something and then you do it, it doesn’t matter how much effort you put into it: if you don’t give it a shot, you are lost. And that’s true for all the little things you do in life, from learning to speak a new language to buying a new pair of shoes. You need to be prepared to screw up.

You don’t become a master of something simply because you know how to do it; you become a master of something if you actually do it.

Don’t treat your art as an end in itself. Just do it. Use your worst instinct.

Give the world a show

And here is the final lesson of the great stories: they go on. Even when the characters that we loved to hate turned into monsters, we still continued to read them.

These stories taught us that when you are faced with the worst you can imagine, and you have no way out, you can start again. You can start again with a new weapon and start again with the weapons of your enemies. You can start again from nothing.

The worst you can imagine doesn’t exist and so you need to create it.

You can start again.

It may seem useless. It might seem hopeless. But let’s be honest: without being able to start again, we would all be dead.

What would you do with one superpower? To do what I do, I would need one of the two most rare of all magical gifts.

That, of course, is to control the elements.

I would need something more than the power to jump tall buildings in a single bound and to turn into a much bigger version of myself.

I would need the power to control the weather or to shape it or control the wind, the lightning, the waves.

What would you do with two?

I love the idea of having super speed, to just zip from here to there, to be able to move things at a moments notice, to be the master of my own destiny, at least as far as being able to control this aspect of reality.

What would you do with just one?

I would simply like to be able to live like a normal person.

I’m tired of being the one everyone else’s backup, the one that takes care of everything else in case the one regular person gets hurt or sick or just needs some rest, I’m tired of the “But, Linda can do this and you can’t” line.

I want to be able to do it if I need to and if I feel like it.

This is a very common theme on my blog and I just want to clarify it and make sure it is understood.

This is not a rant about needing to be the one the others go to, I just want to be able to do it if I want to.

This is not a rant against the idea of backup.

I love the concept of people who could do anything and would not hesitate to do the right thing.

What I am not okay with is someone being less than 100% to make me look good.

This is why I ask, to make myself seem more important, that I would be able to do everything myself.

Not so I can get more recognition or attention, but to prove that I can do anything myself.

It is very much a power fantasy that I had never really put into words before today and I can understand why I put up with being the one others would have to come to, but only in so far as being able to prove myself.

A more active day yesterday.

I started taking baths (showers are not warm enough to soothe my face right now) in the evening and this helped take the redness and puss away, but I have another problem with my face.

The sensitive part is on the bottom of my chin and under my chin, but the redness has migrated up to just below my eye.

I got my netbook working finally, but it seems that the batteries are weak or something and cannot hold a charge for very long.

This is something I need to figure out, if I can, but I am not going to get a new one right now.

I have a small 1. 8ghz xp laptop that I got for $50 off of craigslist in November.

It is so slow that when I turned it on, it took me 15 minutes to get into an internet menu.

My computer has a wireless card so I brought it to work and let it charge overnight.

It works in here now, but as I am at work, I will not be able to post again until I get home.

You meet a new person who behaves exactly like you. The same gesture, the same voice intonation and clothes. You look each other in the eye and you shake hands. You feel comfortable with each other straight away. There is a connection.

And this new connection with a new person has got nothing to do with sexuality, all to do with creating an opening for the other person.

Because it is about having another person in your life who is fully of benefit to you, not because of their sex, not because of anything they have done for you, or anything they can do for you. It is just about the connection that two people create when they meet.

You meet a new person who behaves exactly like you.

The others just got lucky and think they are the first person to ever be able to behave that way.

The middle aged woman always takes my coffee orders.

She never tips well.

There are so many people I know who take her order.

This is simply because she’ll do the exact same thing every time.

For example, I never tip.

I think it’s rude to take someone’s order without even offering.

In all the time I’ve been coming in here, she’s never ever asked me if I like whatever she’s putting in my coffee.

I always tell her to put whatever she thinks I might like in there.

I even tip, like, $1 or something, but she never tips, so I really don’t care.

I really don’t care that my coffee comes out and I only have a teaspoon of skim milk.

I hate skim milk.

And it’s always cool here.

She’s the only one who takes my order.

She’s from Norway.

I think she takes my order to be polite, but I know she doesn’t care about the amount of my drink.

I know for a fact that she doesn’t think I appreciate her taking my order.

It’s not that it takes her five minutes to get my drink, it’s just that it’s a bit silly for someone to ask you what you like when there are five people in the store with no customers.

Then when she gets my drink, she takes it and it gets cold.

Sometimes she’ll just bring it to me cold.

I think she doesn’t want me to bother her anymore because I didn’t want to leave a tip.

I hate feeling like everyone is under me.

Like, no one needs me.

Everyone can just fend for themselves.

Because they always have.

Just because I’m the store owner now doesn’t mean people need to take me seriously.

I always feel like my opinion matters but it really doesn’t.

I feel like I have absolutely no control over anything.

Because I could always do everything the same way, but I choose not to.

I don’t care if other people think it is weird.

Because they’re the only ones who think it is weird.

And it gets a little annoying, though it isn’t my fault.

It gets a little annoying, but I still think it is funny.

There are people who are the first people to notice my reaction to the coffee.

Like, the other day the woman at the next table said “Wow, you pretend you don’t know me.”

You come back home, catch the handle and open the door. It turns out that this is not your apartment and you lost memory. It will not bother you as you walk around the house to find your things and continue on your way, some place else. Those memories will fade. You will not care.”

My dad looked at me blankly, then looked back at the screen. “What the hell are you trying to say?”

“You told her to watch the door, that she should wait there. That is the mothering instinct talking, Dad. It’s what you want, and it’s what you should have wanted,” Mom said.

“It was different back then.” He looked at me. I looked at him. “You were just trying to protect me.”

“We all were,” Mom said.

“So the next time he comes back to his senses,” Dad said, “don’t ever give him the key.”

“I think it’s safe to say he is gone,” Mom said.

“So let’s get some coffee.” Dad didn’t seem to have anything else to say.

“I am leaving,” I said. “Don’t worry, though, Mom and I can take care of ourselves.”

“Goodbye,” Dad said. I couldn’t tell if he had made up his mind about the keys. I decided it didn’t matter. “See you later, Dad.”

“You too, Brian,” he said.

I sat there for a moment in the warm morning air and wondered how I was going to get my things and find a new apartment. I guessed I would look for one without a spare key. Then I wondered what I would do with the key. I stared at the key for a while. It seemed obvious that I should take the key, but for what? I had no idea. I stood up and walked over to my Dad, who still hadn’t moved. I put my hands on the back of his shoulders and smiled. “Thanks for the advice, Dad. And for looking after Mom.”

He stood up, brushed himself off, and walked over to Mom. “You’re welcome, sweetie,” he said.

The door closed.

This is your first day at the new university. You’ve got lost and by mistake, you enter a room full of old items.

These are things like outdated chalkboards, old computers, and old carpets.

You think that everything is out of place.

The board you’re in front of has the word CLIMATE on it.

You’re about to pick up some dry – erase marker to write your name.

You want to sound cool.

Remember, you’ve always wanted to write all over a chalkboard. The chalkboard is really long and it’s attached to the wall with some nail boards.

You get some sharp scissors and get ready to hack off some board.

But you do not.

You smile and think about your friend / enemies. You see him / her in the first thing you turn to: the classroom table.

He / she is sitting on the table.

You don’t like the feeling.

The chalkboard doesn’t have a large area left and you think it’s time to get out of here.

You grab a book and look at the page.

You find a blank one with no text and you fill it with a word like =] >

You smile as you think about your friend. The page is now complete.

You think it is the most perfect page in the whole course.

You take a step away and then you realise what you just did.
You look back at the page, where your name was written.

You see your name surrounded by an ugly cursive.

You haven’t written with cursive in years.

The sharp object was sharp enough to cut through your beautiful writing.

The same sharp object you used to help your friend.

So you were in the habit of always wanting to know what the weather would be like and checking the “weather” app on your iphone.

When the app would turn green, “Good weather today,” you would feel the slightest twinge of satisfaction and pride.

You’re having dinner at Grandma’s. Unfortunately, you don’t like the soup, but you don’t want to make Grandma a pain. You eat until the end but more and more of it appear on your plate. When the kitchen is clean, you notice that you’ve eaten nothing. Is it lunch time? When you’re at your grandmother’s, are you supposed to call her Ma? Are you simply not a girl or are you not getting a word in edgewise? This is my father’s mother, my mother’s mom. Grandma always lived in the same house for as long as I could remember. The blue house sat on the corner of Grandpa’s and Aunt Bea’s block. If I got home late from school, I could stay with her and spend the night. She knew me and I knew her. She could cook just about anything. I remember her large orange potatoes, meatloaf, and stuffing. I remember her squeezing in a few veggies with it.

Grandma was a workhorse. She could churn butter too. The smells of her kitchen are the smells that fill my mind when I think of her.

She always smelled good too. I wonder what the recipe is for soap.

Stories have always intrigued me.

They bring back feelings and memories.

They remind me of the person I once was.

I have an obsessive personality and it has always been hard for me to walk away from a good book.

I lose sleep.

I might get very irked at times.

I could be bribed into something.

I would do anything for a book. I have the first book written and it’s sitting on my bookshelf.

I have read it and reread it.

I have gotten lost in the world that Alice has created.

I have argued with myself in what would have happened in her world had she chosen the right or the wrong path.

I just can’t seem to stop reading it. I have this huge responsibility and that is taking care of my parents.

It consumes most of my time and it is very difficult.

I don’t really have anyone to talk to about the things I am dealing with.

That’s the one thing I have always been able to count on in my life.

My parents and family will always be there for me.

I can count on my brothers too.

They are both very understanding. I have talked to my Dad and he understands the whole issue and what I am going through.

I think he’s just trying to be supportive.

I’m very glad he is supporting me.

I have not really been in the same room as my Dad since I had my little talk.

This is a bit of a stretch for him.

Not much by any means, but you know what I mean.

I feel like he is trying to be tough on me, just like he always has.

There’s a difference, but I don’t see it.

It really hurt him seeing me in that state.

He tried to hide it, but I could tell that he was very disappointed. He wants to be there to help me with my responsibilities.

He’s asking for the occasional night out on the town.

He is joking with me and is trying very hard to make me laugh. I really appreciate what he’s trying to do and I think he just doesn’t realize it. I’m just

During a walk, you find a Chinese happiness cookie. Will you open them? (No, I won’t.) I found a small heart-shaped box in the pocket of the designer jacket I was wearing. I opened it to find a three-word fortune that meant, “It’s complicated.” Is the note from the Rock Stars Forever box another piece of my history from Pop or is it merely some random object in my possession? Who knows. (Seriously, this will not stop me from opening the box and peering inside.)

For the most part, I keep these bits of history with me. Mostly, I store these kinds of things in my studio. The front door doesn’t have a lock. I bought the mailbox to represent my own independence. So my “me” piece is my mailbox. My “poker face” is my grey sweater that has been in use since 2005, bought in Beverly Hills, my ears. They are pierced on top so they lay neatly like a shackle around the base of my neck.

With all of the telling and all of the keeping, the surprises keep coming. Like a daffodil in spring, the fall flowers and décor feel like fresh starts. So, do I throw my stuff out? Do I put a lock on my mailbox?

I doubt it. The memories live inside, and my stuff is with me, and I can open all the boxes as I please. If I want to save my whole soul in a miniature butterfly box (I don’t), so be it. For now, I think it’s best that I keep most of the stuff in my life in my life.

And who knows. Maybe one day I’ll be able to give a gift of these things to my own children. I’m sure they will be as fascinated as I am by all the things I have and know and have done and left behind.
