You work at an airport and there is one person waiting for “arrivals” every week. You notice they leave alone every time. No-one can see what you notice, but in your gut you know that you need to get to the bottom of this. What is going on?
How does a person who can’t even talk find enough strength to leave their home? What is it about a stranger that can make them run to another continent, leave their job and their family?
One day, someone you meet gives you a clue.
“This is different”
It’s about the level of trust and support someone needs to travel to another country. Your instinct is that it takes a lot of trust to leave your comfort zone. So, what is it about someone who is doing this that makes them do it?
“They have a strength in them”
Then you meet the young man who becomes your lifeline. You realise that his strength is in the fact that he is still so close to his loved ones. He has access to his loved ones, who in turn support him by being there for him.
You work at an airport and notice the same person waiting in “arrivals” every week. Each time, they leave alone. One day you muster the courage to ask who they are waiting for. They give a knowing smile, and say, “I’m waiting for my date”
You ask who she is, but the guy seems reluctant to answer. After much prodding, the guy reveals that they’ve been dating for 4 years. “I know it’s a lot,” he says, “but I want to make sure that this time I can introduce her to the people that matter.”
Do you know what this means?
It means that people don’t change. It means that people don’t really “get” the things that they want to. It means that people don’t realize what they’re missing.
It means that there’s no way to tell someone you love them without risking a broken heart. It means that there’s no way to tell them you’re sorry without risking a broken heart.
It means that if you really want to have a good time, you’ve gotta break the rules. It means you gotta have a few rules in your life, and when they get broken, you just gotta accept it and move on. It means that life isn’t fair. It means that sometimes you gotta take what you can get.
It means that there’s no need to chase love. It means that sometimes you gotta be content with what you’ve got. It means that sometimes you’ve gotta take the best of what you’ve got and move on. It means that sometimes you gotta take the best of what you’ve got and move on.
“We all need people who understand”
I have come to the conclusion that people who are determined to take a risk and go far away have a special quality. They have the strength to go to a place they know little about, but are willing to do so. They are not only courageous but they are also strong enough to live life with a couple of extra layers of skin to protect them from a world that may not be quite as welcoming.
We all need people who understand.
My mission was to find this special person. And I did. They are called the Gruyère Travellers.
We all need people who understand.
In this documentary, I meet the Gruyère Travellers. They are a group of young people from around the world, who are travelling to America to live, work and learn for one year.
I meet a young man who loves to cook and hopes to open his own restaurant. A young woman who loves singing and is planning to take up the violin. Another young man who is going to use his American experience to open a gastropub in Switzerland.
“It was so fun, I wanted to do it again”
These people love to travel, love life and love to learn. They are determined to do something new and exciting and they are able to do it with just a bit of extra help.
“It was so fun, I wanted to do it again”
It is all about perspective and supporting those who have it. The Gruyère Travellers show that you can find ways to have a life that is rich, meaningful and full of the joy that life can bring.
