It’s the last day of summer. She wakes up in bed, drenched in ocean water. Nobody is here. 

She checks her phone. Her mom is at work. Her dad is gone. She drinks some water and sits by the window. It\\\\’s gray.

She wishes she could go to school.

She goes downstairs and makes herself breakfast. She takes a shower. She leaves the house with a suitcase and gets into her car.

She gets to the big, empty house, turns on the lights and starts opening windows. She\\\\’s alone.

She makes herself dinner, listens to her favorite podcast. She looks out at the ocean, and the moon, and the waves. She looks up at the sky.

She eats her food and sits on the couch, thinking.

She says goodnight to her dog. She watches him take a shower and then fall asleep. She goes to bed.

And the next day, she wakes up and goes back to school.

And the next day, she leaves school and goes home.

She looks at the sky.

A person wakes up in bed, drenched in salty ocean water.

The next thing they know, they are on the beach, with only their clothes to keep them warm.

They haven’t been on land for years.

Now they must search for a way to get back to civilization.

Finding someone with a vehicle can be an adventure itself.

However, their vehicle is one they wouldn’t want to be seen in – a large blue whale.

The narrator of the story, Penny, explains that she’s been trapped in the whale’s belly for days, ever since it swallowed her boyfriend, Matt, who had the misfortune of being born without a gill.

Penny had been planning on swimming to the surface once the whale had released her, but she has no intention of doing so if it means interacting with the monster inside its belly.

Then she comes to the realization that the creature isn’t actually a whale.

It’s a shark, with a fin and all, and she’s trapped inside its belly.

So she decides to attempt to swim to the surface through the shark’s throat.

As she swims through the shark’s throat, she is disoriented and can’t see the surface, much less Matt, so she swims for hours, but finally reaches the surface.

She almost drowns, but a passing plane spots her and rescues her, which ends the story.

“The Shark” is written in a near-future setting and deals with ecological and climate change.

The narrator is an islander who lives on the island of an unnamed island, which is rapidly succumbing to climate change, and the main character of the story.

As the main character, Penny, explains, this island is losing its coastline and that it will soon be uninhabitable.

The island is home to many species of animals, including the island itself, which is the size of a house and completely covered in moss.

She says that the moss forms over the island, which explains why the island has no trees and is green all year round.

The most interesting species of animal on the island are the many sharks that live in the water.

The narrator claims that the shark is the island’s main food source.

When the island is completely covered in moss, the sharks eat the moss and also eat anything else they come across.

When the island begins to sink, the sharks must leave the island to find a new home.

The narrator says that these sharks have been living on the island for centuries, and many of them still live on the island today.

She says that the sharks have been living in the same areas where they lived before the island sank, and have developed to a level that they are no longer endangered.

Penny has one more question for the shark.

“Do you ever wonder what it’s like to live in the world?” She asks.

“Do you ever wonder what it’s like to be me?
