You were at the funeral last month. One day you met the same person you believed to be dead.
You read an article about a local band and think, they are making good music. You know the songs. It reminds you of the old days. You decide to go see them. You get a ticket. You find out they are playing the next night.
I’m not sure I’ve answered the question yet.
Are you in a band?
Have you ever been in a band?
How long have you been in a band?
I was in a band at about the age of fifteen.
Why do you think you were in a band?
The music. I’d been playing guitar since I was a kid. I was always one of those kids that “sings” when he’s happy. I wasn’t that good. I couldn’t really carry a tune, but I could play it well enough. I was kind of popular with the girls in the band because I could sing them some songs.
When did you stop playing?
When I moved to Texas in the early nineties. I was in a band in California. We were kind of big for a short time. I got really involved in music and went off the deep end. I had some really bad experiences. I got very depressed and tried to end my life. The band broke up.
How long were you in the band?
Just a few months.
So how did you end up meeting that woman you believed to be dead?
I was back in Texas. I started reading an old newspaper I found. It had an article about a couple who were taking care of a homeless man. He seemed to be suffering from some sort of mental disability, but he seemed to be sweet. After a while they kind of adopted him. One day he wandered into town, and they assumed he had gotten lost. They tried to help him out, but he seemed to be in trouble. He would talk to himself and wouldn’t let them touch him.
What did he say?
“I’m a man. I’m a man, but I’m not sure I’m a man.”
He claimed to have been a scientist who had been working on a cure for cancer.
“A man, but I’m not sure I’m a man.”
What were you doing at the time?
I was living at home with my parents. I didn’t have a job. I was pretty depressed and had been to the doctor and he had given me some medication to help me cope with my depression.
How did you meet this woman?
I was doing some yard work. I saw her sitting in a lawn chair with a broken umbrella and I thought she looked cold. I went over to her and asked if she needed help. She said she was waiting for her daughter to pick her up. I gave her a ride home.
What happened next?
We exchanged phone numbers. A few days later she came to my house. She stayed for a few days. We went out on a few dates. We were together for about a month. We broke up.
She had some family issues.
Was this when you discovered you were not in a band?
What was the first concert you ever went to?
I’ve been to a few concerts. The first concert I went to was by the band Sting. I thought it was really good. It was on at the Dallas State Fair, and it was really good. The next one was by the Grateful Dead. I saw them three times
