an idea

How do you come up with a good story idea?

Don’t stress it out, keep reading …or scroll to the bottom to find Walle’s story ideas.

Introduction

You’ve always wanted to be a writer. You have an idea, a good one, and you know if you write it well it could be published. But you’re nervous about sending it out into the big bad world. What is the best way to get started?

“It’s none of their business that you have to learn how to write. Let them think you were born that way.”
~ Ernest Hemingway

The First Step

The first step is to read other short story collections. Study them, see what makes a good short story. Study the authors themselves; learn their style and how they tell their stories. Learn what makes their writing unique so that when you write your own stories, you will have your own voice reflected in each one of them. Once you’ve found the type of style that catches your eye and appeals to your sense of writing, then it’s time to start writing something yourself.

How to Get Over Writers’s Block?

One way to get over writer’s block is to write something unrelated. Sometimes a simple idea will trigger the writing of something more important. You are not being paid by the word, so do not spend three pages describing what your character had for dinner last night or where the main character lives. Keep your stories concise, keep them moving, and keep them interesting.

Troubles?

If you are writing a short story and are having trouble coming up with a beginning, try writing your ending first. Then write the whole thing in reverse. Often times when you get to the end of your story, a better beginning will pop into your head rather than trying to work from the beginning.

Madness or what?

Is it something that just happens or is there a method to the madness?

We’ve been writing for over 5000 years now and we still find that sometimes our creativity is blocked. It may be that I have too much time on our hands, too many other things to occupy our minds…or it may just be writer’s block.

How to Get Inspired?

I know I’m not alone and most writers have days where they are completely unable to think of a story in any way, shape or form. Some days, I can come up with more ideas than others

“A writer is a person for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.”

~Thomas Mann

Find Your Roots

Some writers say they need a kick start at the beginning of a story and then their imagination takes over from there.

They have some kind of plot or idea for the first line and then they are off!

I know that writing on paper with pen and paper is different from typing away on a computer screen because our minds are wired differently. When writing by hand you are more likely to be able to let your mind wander without getting stuck on something specific or getting distracted by something else on the screen.
